Abstract
-
Sleep is a fundamental biological process essential for maintaining metabolic regulation, immune function, cognitive performance and mental health. This presentation explores the importance of sleep, circadian rhythm regulation, and the biological consequences of sleep deprivation. Emphasis is placed on the role of sleep in immune memory consolidation, nervous system waste clearance via the glymphatic system and emotional regulation. This presentation also examines how chronic sleep loss disrupts immune responses, impairs cognition and also increases the risk of anxiety, depression and neurodegeneration. Overall, this work demonstrates the essential role of sleep in maintaining physiological integrity, and reducing disease risk.
