This paper addresses the concept of urban stress through the transactional model pioneered by Lazarus and Folkman. The stressor, the cognitive appraisal, the coping strategies, and the reaction to stress constitute the four key elements of the framework and the outcome is manifested in a cognitive, emotional, behavioral, or physiological manner. COVID-19 as a stressor affects all the aforementioned elements with mental health, gender, age and personality traits determining how the individual will react. In addition, cross-cultural differences, social support, and type of coping are presented. Lastly, solutions pertaining to social support and city development are proposed to secure well-being.
My creative project presents the city of Kabul in Afghanistan, showcasing the ways that diverse sociopolitical dynamic clash, but also converge, and together shape the city’s evolution over time. Despite being often overshadowed by narratives of solely conflict or only glory, my project aims to shed light on Kabul emerging as a crucible for social reform, reflecting resilience amongst turmoil, as well as sparks of agency, freedom, and democratic expression within a dystopic city of control, restrictions, and human right abolitions. The city is a result of the complex web of ever-changing urban culture and intricate relationships between multiple layers.
Over Rome’s overflowing pathways, this vibrant painting reflects the city’s soul. The Vespa dominates this scene as an emblematic sign of urban movement and Italian style. This is an absolute display of the power of the Vespa on the architectural and cultural landscape of Rome. In my presentation I will explore the transformative role of Vespa, linking it to transportation, lifestyle, and urban aesthetics. As it moves through the city’s streets, it leaves unforgettable tracks that shape Rome’s story and enrich it during every lively trip.
The present research designed to investigate the effect of red color on two tasks (simple reaction time task and choice reaction time task) that measured sustained attention and differ in complexity, as well as on state anxiety levels. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the two conditions (red and blue).. Results showed that participants in the red group made more errors on the difficult task (p = .049), but no difference was found for the simple task (p = .908). Regarding the anxiety scores analysis revealed a main effect of time ( p<.001) but no effect of color on state anxiety levels. This study’s findings highlight the complex interaction between color processing and task demands, and the need for more research in this direction.
"The Night Falls in Sarajevo" offers an immersive journey into Balkan intrigue, blending history with strategy in a Mafia-style game. Players assume roles from the infamous assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, navigating identity, politics, and deception. Through covert alliances and strategic moves, they uncover the truth amidst geopolitical tensions and critically reflect on nationalist narratives and ethical dilemmas. Every move in this game not only echoes historical significance but also challenges players to navigate the complexities of identity and power in an entertaining and immersive manner.
A condensed play on the Greek Civil War, placing emphasis on the identities of Balkan individuals. Centered around the protagonist Nikoletta and her experiences living in a village in the Peloponnese, the play is split up into four acts, jumping from the present, to 1948, then 1978 and ultimately back into present. The time jumps encapsulate perspectives Nikoletta faced during the tribulations of the Greek Civil War, after the war and efficaciously enunciates the need and power of compassion, historical reference and the dangers of polarization in society, regardless of time and setting.
Misirlou is a folk song rooted in the multicultural character of the Ottoman Empire. Because of this, it exists in and is claimed by the many different cultures of the East Mediterranean area. This interpretation attempts to bring American blues influences which are not traditionally associated with Misirlou, to show that art does not “belong” to a particular culture.
As societies progress, they find new ways to incorporate technology into our daily lives. Social media has become an integral part of the way we communicate and interact with people. However, the world of social media allows space for hate speech, which sometimes can lead to the devaluation of other human beings. Women politicians are a group of people who face tremendous criticism on social media, not however for their policies, but rather for their womanhood. This pilot thesis explores the role of social media in the political sphere, identifies hate speech that exists on social media platforms, and pinpoints the misogynistic behavior towards female PMs, focusing on Finland’s ex-Prime Minister Sanna Marin. By conducting content analysis, I explored the different kinds of hate comments on Twitter that are used to target Sanna Marin, proving my research hypothesis.
A family scene in which a grandmother talks about the city of Izmir(Smyrna) that she was raised and lived before the exchange of populations as the children requested for their bed time story. Music, video from movie and photos travel the audience to those times before Asia minor catastrophe and the deportation. The elders mainly focus to teach them core values written in the «compass of peace» as a learning outcome for next generation and describe slightly the painful historical events so as to inspire them and teach them about resilience, growth, hope and humanity for their future steps. The traumatic events are played in the photos and the nostalgic emotions are spoken through the music. In words only stories of hope, concern and love are expressed.
Inspired by electromagnetic waves, I wanted to express the complexity of light and its thousands of applications into our world, or more thoroughly, the thousands of ways light is continuously finding to express itself. Specifically, I chose the chameleon as an example of a lizard which gives way into ultraviolet lighting for survival purposes. Additionally, taking advantage of other natural elements like eggshells, banana skins, olive oil, honey and tonic water, which have the same reflective properties, I decided to combine the two into an integrated creative arts project. More specifically, I draw a chameleon and to its body I attached the before mentioned elements in order to display the natural phenomenon using an ultraviolet light torch in an overall very dark environment.
